Zachary Bud Wilson

Zachary Bud Wilson is a Maryland-based percussionist and co-founder of the percussion quartet Matchstick Percusion, an ensemble dedicated to new music and promoting works by underrepresented artists through commissioning, collaborative performance, and educational outreach. Founded in 2019, Matchstick Percussion regularly performs at universities, art galleries, theaters, and other venues in DC, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. To fulfill our mission, the ensemble has commissioned works from Kendall K. Williams, Brian Grasier, Brianna Wiegand, Bryan Wysocki, and Jordan Chase, performing at new music festivals such as So Percussion  Summer Institute, Penn State’s New Music Festival, and Rhoneymeade Festival.


Mr. Wilson received a Bachelor of Music degree from Towson University under Dr. Michelle
Humphreys, and a Master of Music degree from The Pennsylvania State University under Dr. Lee Hinkle where he was a Graduate Assistant for Athletic Bands. Mr. Wilson is currently studying with Jonathan Bisesi at University of Maryland where he is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree and holds a Percussion Studio Graduate Assistantship.


Mr. Wilson has appeared as a concerto soloist with the Towson University Symphony Orchestra
and has given solo percussion performances at festivals and events such as Xenakis 100, Vibraphone Century Festival, Percussion Arts Society Days of Percussion, and has given masterclasses at Towson University, The Pennsylvania State University, and University of Maryland. In various groups as a freelancer, Mr. Wilson has appeared at venues such as The Kennedy Center with the New Orchestra of Washington, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art for the Bang on a Can LOUD Weekend, Hirshhorn Museum in DC with 21st Century Consort, Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, PS21: Performance Spaces for the 21st Century, Capital One Hall, Heinz Hall, and Princeton University.

 

Mr. Wilson’s musical expertise spans many genres and styles including contemporary art music,
jazz, marching, orchestral, Baroque, and metal. As a teacher, Mr. Wilson’s students have gone
on to major in jazz drum set as well as classical percussion, and have secured positions playing
in musical theater, Drum Corps International, and Drum Corps Associates.
